By the end of 2004, there were 310 million inkjet printers and multifunction devices (which use the same cartridges) in use worldwide, according to Lyra Research. For every laser printer in use, there are now five inkjet printers in use. Consumers spend $13 billion per year on inkjet cartridges.
The potential for success in remanufacturing cartridges is genuine and enormous. The
opportunity is here; the time is now. I know of no other business offering this kind of growth and profitability that can be started in your home for a modest investment. Inkjet technology has been accelerating at a fast pace — more so than other computer technologies. The primary advancements have been made in the areas of the quality of output and the speed of output. These two areas are responsible for much of the explosive growth we are seeing.
There are whole ranges of new applications being created because of the availability of
new and exciting media on which to print. Special glossy papers that produce photo-quality
output, for instance, allow the company producing trade-show exhibit signage to use inkjet
technology to produce dazzling color banners. Fiber-based media opened inkjet printing to the
apparel market, in which companies are now producing caps and T-shirts with inkjet printers,
and the textiles market, in which inkjet technology is used for printing patterns in carpet. These
are just a few examples of the forces driving the inkjet market. As the technology expands, so
too will the ever-widening group of users. This is an exciting, growing industry with unlimited
potential for the entrepreneur looking for a business to start.
The inkjet industry continues to grow, and we have only seen the beginning. What has
spurred this growth? The combination of low (and getting lower) printer costs combined with
high (and getting higher) resolution. Providing excellent color graphics and sharp text proved to
be exactly what millions of new computer owners wanted. While this existing (and expanding)
market can support a huge number of recyclers, technology advancements of inks, paper, and
print heads continues to improve. The resolution and quality of the output is now at a level at
which inkjet is competing with other formats for industrial applications? Inkjet usage will be
explosive in these areas. Because I believe many existing marketing opportunities are still out
there and remain untapped, this book will also explore ways to uncover them. I encourage you
to put to use some of the inkjet marketing strategies you’ll find here and report to us how they
work for your company.
Although printer manufacturers are aware of the remanufacturing of their cartridges, no
patents are being infringed upon, and the manufacturers remain pretty quiet regarding the use
of them. Officially, the policy is that they do not recommend the use of remanufactured
cartridges, often accompanied by a weak warning about warranty validity should the printer
become damaged by the use of remanufactured cartridges. Many of us feel that manufacturers
are willing to give up a small portion of the replacement cartridge business to remanufacturers
because they feel that this practice may alleviate consumer backlash over the high price of
OEM cartridges, allowing them to maintain their lucrative pricing schedules indefinitely.
It is safe to say that the market for remanufactured inkjet cartridges will remain one of the
most stable and growing business opportunities available to entrepreneurs for quite some time.
Your small business’s competitive advantage rests with your ability to tailor your offering to small groups of consumers — to meet a few people’s needs very well rather than a lot of people’s needs in a lukewarm manner. There are at least two other areas of opportunity for new businesses. Opportunities exist for new businesses to serve or supply larger businesses. Most large businesses rely on smaller businesses to supply them with products and services. Larger firms frequently look to employment agencies, maintenance businesses, trucking firms, and numerous other businesses as an alternative to performing these functions for themselves. This trend is expected to continue in the future. The trend toward a service economy continues in the 21st century. This represents a particularly attractive area of opportunity for new businesses. Service businesses usually require less money to start on a small scale. Because of limited economies of scale, larger businesses may not have a cost advantage.
Remanufacturing inkjet cartridges many of the same properties as a service type business. Although the purchase by your customer is considered a sale, and not a service, (the former is taxable and the latter is not), you are actually providing a service (a refill service) and can be considered part of the service economy.
From a technological standpoint, inkjet cartridge processing is far simpler to set up and
operate than laser cartridge recharging. Remanufacturing inkjet cartridges is a simple, straightforward process that can be accomplished with minimal training and equipment.
Color inkjet output is surging nationwide, and the potential users in this group are diverse. In addition to the end-users and the small office, home office (SOHO) market, photographers, advertising agencies, service bureaus, commercial artists, stock photo agencies and banner companies are among the many that will be incorporating more inkjet output into their businesses.
The motivated person can succeed in this business with a starting budget of as little as $100.
We have many long-term customers who started this way. You begin with one cartridge and one customer, and go from there. That being said, a more realistic figure for most of us would be in the $1000 range. Without question, you could easily spend 5 or $10,000 on inks, equipment, printers etc. This is what makes inkjet remanufacturing so appealing. There are not very many business opportunities that could be started with such a range of startup costs.
With so many magazines, advertisements and infomercials touting home-based or work-at home
business “opportunities,” the sad fact is that precious few of these are actually legitimate
business startups, with low startup costs and excellent earning potential.
Happily, inkjet cartridge remanufacturing is one of the few business opportunities that meet
all of the criteria for starting your own successful home-based business. It is perhaps the
perfect business for those who want to work out of the home, for any one of the many reasons
people have for wanting a home-based business.
Being that each OEM cartridge has a specific ink and has its own chemical and proprietary composition, it is necessary to have the refill ink be as close as possible to that ink for the refilled cartridge to fill, print and function properly. Using “universal” inks can cause clogging, failed cartridges, and other complications due to sponge compatibility with the inks and filling methods.
Different sizes and locations of the print heads and fill holes require specific cradles. The main equipment will not need to be replaced. The cradles are relatively inexpensive.
Because we want to give you the flexibility of selecting each piece of equipment according to your remanufacturing needs. This also allows you to have higher production having one person performing one step of the remanufacturing process and not having two or three people crowded around one machine. If there would ever be a need for repair your whole operation will not be shut down.
Absolutely. We have distributors that you may order from if you are in their assigned territory, otherwise we can ship to wherever you are, given that your import policies allow so.
It depends on the cartridge. The HP 15/45 style cartridges are filled through the printhead due to design, but the preferred method for most cartridges is to fill in a vacuum using the fill holes.
R-JetTek uses only OCP inks from Germany. OCP is some of the best ink available in the world, and due to their stringent testing, it is consistent from batch to batch.
Vacuum filling is considered the industry standard, so look for a machine that uses vacuum fill technology. Machines built with precision ink pumps are also important so that a consistent volume of ink is pumped into the cartridge. Look for machines made in America. Machines made in other countries usually use cheaply made internal components which fail after extended use. Your machine should be user friendly also. Machines that require manual filling of syringes or have external pumps should be avoided.
It is illegal for a printer manufacturer to require you to use any particular brand of supplies. An OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) cannot avoid your warranty unless they can conclusively prove that other brands of supplies will damage the machine.
R-JetTek offers full support for all of the products we sell, whether it be questions about the operation and maintenance of our equipment or the processes needed to correctly remanufacture your inkjet cartridges.
