Each drop of ink printed
out of an ink jet printer has a tail or portion of the drop that is
traveling slower than the main body. As the drop travels farther from
the print head, the tail gets longer. If the tail gets too long or if
the substrate is traveling too fast, the drop does not hit in just one
spot but is spread out along the path of travel.
