Part Four: Growing Your Business

Chapter Five: Adding Printer Service

This is by far the most profitable way to expand your business. Your customers will be extremely receptive to utilizing your company for service work, especially the ones whose off ice you are already making deliveries to every month or two. Contrary to what you might expect, adding a service department to your company is not as complex as it appears. Many companies have doubled their monthly sales by offering service to their existing customer base. There are many avenues to explore when determining exactly how to best integrate printer service into your business. Obviously, if you had enough spare capital, the entire department could be set up by hiring trained technicians and supplying them with a parts inventory, tools, and the workspace needed. Most of you, however, can be successful in service by employing some of the following practices, most of which will not require large funding or hiring to accomplish. Planning in advance to add printer service at some point down the road can make for a smooth transition. Start slow by offering preventative maintenance for ink jet printers to your customers. Preventative maintenance really just means periodic cleaning, and cartridge alignment, or calibration. Anyone can perform this maintenance by merely reading the user manual, which most users do not do. These agreements often bundle cartridge refills with a periodic cleaning of the printer. Unlike service contracts, preventative maintenance contracts can be sold to customers with printers still under warranty, as proper maintenance is required for warranty validity. As you become more familiar with the hardware, add impact printer preventative maintenance. Once you are comfortable with these printers, learning to service them is much less intimidating. Ink jet printers are solid workhorses and rarely break down. In the beginning, consider subcontracting out to local service depot repairs. Excellent training is available for learning printer repair in the form of videos, as well as hands-on-training.
