Part One: Ink Jet Primer
The ink jet industry continues to grow, and we have only seen the beginning. What has spurred on this growth? The combination of low and getting lower printer costs combined with high and getting higher resolution. Providing excellent color graphics and sharp back text proved to be exactly what millions of new computer owners wanted. While this existing (and expanding) market can support a huge number of recyclers, technology advancements of inks, paper, and print heads continues to improve. Now the resolution and quality of the output is at a level at which ink jet is competing with other formats for industrial applications. Ink jet usage is explosive in these areas. Industries newly using ink jet will be massive consumers of ink jet cartridges and therein lies a golden opportunity. Those entrepreneurs who can identify where ink jet technology is replacing other print technology are in a prime position to capture and keep that new business. Digital photo processing is one of these emerging markets that have enormous potential. The recycling (remanufacturing) of ink jet cartridges is the only alternative consumers have to the expensive (OEM) replacements. Based on current figures, more than $10 billion will be spent annually on replacement ink jet cartridges by the turn of the century. The percentage of these dollars spent on remanufactured cartridges is growing quickly, as users become more educated about cartridge availability. Those in the business of supplying remanufactured cartridges are finding their business growing quickly. Indeed, in today's market, to be part of any industry that is in its infancy of rapid growth is getting harder and harder to come by these days. In summary, the market for remanufactured ink jet cartridges will remain one of the most stable and growing business opportunities available to entrepreneurs for quite some time.
